So happy to have found these little beauties yesterday whilst out walking in woodland. This is the county flower of Lincolnshire. 💜 . Common dog-violets can be found in deciduous woods and hedge banks, but can also grow in pastures, mountain rocks and along country lanes. Their presence is an indicator of ancient woodland, and mass germination can occur when a wood is coppiced. This is the last photo of Albert, taken recently one bright and frosty sunup. On Thursday morning this week Albert and Moody Margaret were taken by a fox; we found them both in long grass across the field with their heads ripped off. They'd put up a very brave fight judging by the amount of feather debris on the short grass around the coop. Linwood Warren is a heathland nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The reserve has an other-worldly feel to it because of the wonderful grasses and plants. Ling, bell heather, cross-leaved heath and bilberry grow here; and there are damp areas rich in mosses and lichens. 21 species of butterfly and over 200 moths have been recorded on this site, along with many dragonflies. If you're patient you may see three types of woodpecker as well as goldcrests, woodcock and buzzard. Mammals include water shrew, rabbits, stoat and fox. There are numerous insects and creepy crawlies to be spotted too. I especially like the Serengeti appearance of one part of the reserve. Linwood Warren is always open for visitors - it's managed by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust.
