Mama swan and her four cygnets. Dad was close by keeping a lookout for them all. If you've ever tried to capture a family of feeding swans with every head out of the water at the same time, you'll understand when I say it's almost impossible. This tree is one of a line of huge deciduous trees growing along the driveway. Today I noticed that there were large flowers on it that looked like water lilies, and I had no idea what they were. After a little research I now realise that this tree is a Tulip tree or American Whitewood (Liriodendron tulipifera), part of the magnolia family of trees. I've photographed the foliage of this beauty in all seasons and it's especially spectacular in the autumn, when it turns from apple green to shades of tan and golden yellow and its branches reach down and sweep the lawn. It seems these trees will live up to 200 years, and will only flower like this once they reach their late teens. I can only assume that this is quite a young tree as we've not seen these stunning flowers on it before. I think it beats the copper beech trees we have here with its special beauty. Bees love the Meadow Cranesbill in the wild and overgrown field here. Wondering if the bees visiting the field today will be flying back to Alan's hives just up the road.
